Ekin Gündüz Özdemirci and Nurten Bayraktar are two academics who met at the Environmental Humanities Center at Cappadocia University while working to raise awareness about the environment and climate crisis in the fields of film, media, and literature. They began collaborating on projects and launched Ekofilm: Sustainable Production Platform in 2023 with the goal of reducing the environmental impact of the film and media industry and harnessing its potential to raise social awareness about the climate crisis.
Ekin and Nurten developed resources to enhance knowledge and awareness based on their research into the needs of the film and media industry in Türkiye, aiming to promote sustainable practices. They published the Sustainable Production Guideline and the Sustainable Content Production Guideline, which include a tool for calculating the carbon footprint specific to film productions. Ekin and Nurten also provide consultancy for productions and offer training courses for relevant groups. They collaborate with a variety of stakeholders, including public agencies, universities, non-governmental organizations, and production companies, to promote an environmentally friendly transformation in the industry.
Leveraging the power of movies and stories, EkoFilm: Sustainable Production Platform also serves as a network to facilitate knowledge and experience sharing by bringing together field experts. Through this platform, Ekin and Nurten map out potential steps to reduce carbon footprints and encourage responsible consumption habits on movie sets, and they aim to have a specific line of recognized professionals in the industry to wholly supervise the practices in the field. EkoFilm: Sustainable Production Platform reports outline actions to prevent ecological damage that is often overlooked due to the dynamic working environment in the film and media industry. The Platform also meets with decision-makers to develop industry-specific policies and come up with permanent solutions.
Ekin and Nurten believe that filmmaking processes should strive to achieve energy efficiency, sets should reduce their waste, and social environmental awareness should be increased through storytelling in Türkiye, one of the markets that produces and exports the highest number of TV series.
Having reached over 6,000 people so far, Ekin Gündüz Özdemirci and Nurten Bayraktar have developed solutions to minimize the environmental damage caused by sets through their research in the film and media industry. With their guidelines, carbon footprint calculators, and training programs specifically designed for industry staff, students, and trainers, they continue to make a difference by ensuring that series, movies, commercials, and TV productions take environmentally sustainable steps.
