This Week's Changemaker; "Organic Nazmi" Contributes to Economic Development in One of the Turkey's Poorest Regions
On 11 October 2009 Sabancı Foundation's "Turkey's Changemakers" program hosts "Organic Nazmi" who has contributed to economic development by revolutionizing farming in Eastern Turkey.
Nazmi Ilıcalı (nicknamed "Organic Nazmi") brought a new notion of agricultural production to the eastern Anatolia region through his "Daphan Plains Contracted Organic Agriculture" project which mobilized 663 farmers in Erzurum to establish the Eastern Anatolia Farmers and Stockbreeders Association. Since 1998, Nazmi Ilıcalı has trained and mobilized 3.500 farmers in organic farming. Through several projects (one of which was Turkey's first organic milk project) Mr. Nazmi's work has now spread to 9 provinces in Eastern Turkey. His work has earned him entry into Ashoka's acclaimed social entrepreneur network.
