Erhan Ağbaba Helps Promote the Self-Esteem of Children
On 14 March 2010 Sabancı Foundation's "Turkey's Changemakers" program hosts Erhan Ağbaba, a guidance counselor in an elementary school, who reaches out to educators, families, and children themselves to improve the self-esteem of children.
Erhan Ağbaba's "I Can Succeed If You Appreciate" Project criticizes education systems that evaluate children based on their grades. The project argues that children's social and cultural activities should also be appreciated.
Another one of Ağbaba's projects emphasizes the positive impact of parent involvement on students' academic performance. He also developed a "Parent Education" Project, which aims to give education to parents on issues such as school-phobia and to organize seminars to discuss problems children face at school. Last but not least, Ağbaba's "School Administration Based on Children's Rights" Project argues the reorganization of school administration systems based on children's rights and works to raise awareness for children's rights.
Erhan Ağbaba presented his projects at "Best Practices in Education Conference" organized by the Education Reform Initiative, a project of the İstanbul Policy Center based at the Sabancı University, and several local workshops in different cities in Turkey. With the support of the Governorship of İstanbul, the Parent Education Project is planned to be implemented in İstanbul.
