Mediterranean Conservation Society

Mediterranean Conservation Society was founded in 2010 under the leadership of Zafer Kızılkaya with the aim of conserving natural habitats and restoring degraded coastal ecosystems in Mediterranean.

Thanks to Mediterranean Conservation Society, the biggest no fishing zone of Mediterranean was declared in Gökova Bay and the marine guard system was developed which is operated by local fishermen. With this system, the marine guardians surveil illegal fishing, inform people and work in cooperation with related law enforcers when they detect an illegal act.

Since the project started, ecological diversity increased in Gökova Bay. The fishery now meets the requirements of quality standards of European Union Common Fisheries Policy. Thus, local fisher income has risen by 400%.

Mediterranean Conservation Society also implements projects for fisherwomen. The Association gives woman rights trainings and provides equipment support to improve their working conditions.

Mediterranean Conservation Society contributed to sustainable fishery, developed projects to protect endangered species including monk seals and sandbar sharks. It created an exemplary model in Gökova Bay. It created a huge difference both for a more sustainable environment and for the protection of Mediterranean ecosystem's richness.
