8.5 million persons with disabilities living in Turkey are facing problems about equal participation in cultural life. To eliminate these problems, a group of friends has brought Accessible Film Festival into action since 2013.
All the movies/films shown in the festival are presented with audio description for those who are visually impaired, and sign language and detailed subtitles for those who are hearing impaired. Beside this, autism-friendly additional screenings are realized. Also, festival venues are selected among the places accessible for physically handicapped people. The movies/films, which have become accessible, are being compiled at the Accessible Movies/Films Library after screenings and accessible movie/film archive is created. In addition to movie/film screenings, many various events are organized such as workshops, seminars, etc.
All the events at the Accessible Film Festival are offered for free for the audience. More than 300 movies/films have been shown at the festival since 2013 and reached over 20 thousand people with and without disabilities. Besides contributing to the cultural life of the persons with disabilities, the festival also creates space for those individuals to socialize.
The Accessible Film Festival has emerged from the dreams of a group of cinema lover friends. The festival has worked for equal access to the cultural life for everyone and touched thousands of lives of persons with disabilities. It enabled individuals with different disabilities to come together and made it possible for individuals with and without disabilities to attend the same event. The festival has made a huge difference both in the cultural life of the country and in the lives of persons with disabilities.
